Prostitution and pornography are illegal in India

New Delhi,
8 April 2012

A rally will be organized in the capital on 14th April by a group that calls itself “Indians for Sexual Liberties” and they will be making a public demand for the first time in India for legalization of prostitution, pornography and sex toys. They’ll also be campaigning in support of the nationwide decriminalization of homosexuality and against censorship of art and cinema.

Talking to Pink Pages, Lakshman Singh, the founder of the initiative said, “First of all, we seek to make our government acknowledge the gravity of this issue and initiate legal reforms like legalization of prostitution and pornography as well as removal of ban on sex toys in India. When the very sexual act is permissible why not its various manifestations and depiction? The second issue is regarding legalizing sex toys. How can a sex toy harm society? This question is never answered by legal authorities. The third and most important issue is about legalising prostitution. In our society with adverse sex ratio mostly men are deprived of sexual pleasure. Age of marriage is increasing due to career issues. Suppressed sexuality is giving birth to many problems. Regarding prostitution government has adopted a dual policy. We want to legalize organized prostitution.”

Lakshman Singh said that several organizations and individuals who’ve previously campaigned on issues like the rights of sex workworkers and decriminalization of homosexuality are supporting the cause and expects several hundred people to be attending the rally. When asked if India is ready to address such controversial issues, he replied, “We’re ready to talk about the issue- and that’s what matters.” The parade will start at 4pm from Barakhambha-Tostoy Road crossing and end at Jantar Mantar.
